Meet Katie
“The simple things like exploring outdoors with my young person has opened up new experiences for me.”
Katie
When Katie first joined COVEY nearly a year ago, she stepped into the role of a one-to-one befriender, ready to make a difference in a young person’s life. What started as a simple act of giving time has grown into a journey full of new experiences and genuine connection.
Looking back over the past year, it’s not the big outings or planned activities that stand out the most for Katie, but the small, everyday moments.
“The simple things like exploring outdoors have been some of the best memories I have with befriending, it’s opened up new experiences for myself, and getting to experience them with my wee person is something I’ll happily remember.”
Like many new volunteers, Katie’s very first meeting with the young person she matched with came with its share of nerves.
“The first meeting and getting to know what the child likes and their interests was a challenge for me. Meeting people for the first time is always difficult!”
But with time, trust and shared adventures, those early nerves turned into a trusting relationship. Through befriending, Katie has seen first-hand how important it is for young people to have someone there for them.
“We’ve done lots of days out and activities that my young person wouldn’t have had the chance to do otherwise. Being there as support and a shoulder to lean on when they may not have that elsewhere really makes a difference.”
When asked about the most rewarding parts of the role, Katie’s answer comes easily: “Hearing the laughs and seeing the smiles.” There is also a sense of pride in the fun achievements Katie has shared with her young person, like earning a certificate in gold panning on one of their outings.
Volunteering with COVEY has been more than just giving time, it’s been a journey of connection and fun. For Katie, it’s the simple moments, shared experiences, and genuine laughter that make befriending truly unforgettable.
