Jessica came to COVEY on placement as part of her university studies. She kindly shared what the journey has been like so far.

When I first found out I’d been placed at COVEY for my placement, I hadn’t actually chosen it myself, but I can now say with complete honesty that I’m extremely grateful that this is where I ended up.

From my very first day, I was struck by how friendly, approachable, and welcoming every member of staff was. The warmth of the team made settling in easy, and I immediately felt comfortable within the organisation.

Throughout my placement I’ve had the chance to support two different groups in North Lanarkshire, and both experiences have been incredibly positive. Watching the young people genuinely enjoy themselves and build meaningful relationships with staff and volunteers has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my time here. Those moments of laughter, connection, and mutual trust have made a lasting impact on me.

This has been my first experience working in youth work, and it has not only helped me grow professionally, but personally as well. I’ve gained a completely new appreciation for everything that happens behind the scenes - how much planning, organisation, and teamwork goes into making sure each group runs smoothly.

Witnessing the dedication and commitment of staff and volunteers has shown me just how much Covey puts into supporting young people, and it has made me realise that this charity deserves far more recognition for the positive impact it has in the community.

I’m excited to take the skills and insight I’ve gained into my studies and future career. Understanding the importance of preparation, communication, and building strong relationships has been invaluable, and I know it will shape my approach moving forward.

My favourite part of working with the team has undoubtedly been the people. Everyone has been kind, welcoming, and genuinely supportive from the moment I arrived. The way they constantly check in and make sure I’m comfortable has made such a difference. Their encouragement and warmth have made my placement not only positive, but truly meaningful.

My experience with COVEY has exceeded every expectation I had. I’ve learned so much already, and I’m excited to continue growing as I move forward with confidence into whatever comes next.
