Gordon Roberts

From years spent working directly with children and young people, I have seen how profoundly a positive, trusting relationship can shape a life. The right support can build confidence, agency and self-esteem, qualities that open doors to brighter futures.

This understanding is what inspired me to join the Board. I wanted to play a part in ensuring that children, young people and families receive the support they need at the earliest possible moment, and to contribute to an organisation committed to making that support meaningful, compassionate and lasting.

One of the moments that made me most proud to be part of COVEY was attending COVEY Connect in June. This brought together Board members, staff, volunteers, children, young people and families in one shared space, celebrating achievements and reflecting on the journeys we take together. The energy and hope in the room were unmistakable!

Hearing stories of progress and seeing genuine happiness on the faces of those we support was a powerful reminder of our purpose. It reinforced that the work we do as a Board directly contributes to real change in people’s lives.

In my role, I aim to bring thoughtful listening, constructive challenge and collaborative problem-solving to Board discussions. My professional experience helps me understand how strategic decisions shape day-to-day practice, and I work to ensure our direction is not only ambitious but grounded in the realities of the families we serve. I also bring a deep passion for enabling children and young people to flourish, helping them build the confidence and resilience to influence their own futures.

Our strategy days are a highlight of the year, giving Board members and staff a chance to step back, reflect and plan together. They are opportunities to create space for new ideas, shared learning and, as we often say, “a bit of magic.”

To anyone thinking about joining the Board, I would say this: your time, skills and perspective could make a significant difference. COVEY is a forward-thinking organisation with a proven track record of supporting children, young people and families when they need it most. If you have the commitment and the drive to help shape a sustainable future for the organisation, your contribution will be valued. You will be part of building brighter futures for the next generation!
